Do Uber And Lyft Provide Insurance Protection For Their Drivers, Passengers, And Others?

When an Uber or Lyft car is involved in a car crash while picking up, transporting or dropping off a passenger, the Uber or Lyft driver as well as passengers are entitled to insurance coverage from the rideshare company under some circumstances. Find out your rights when injured in an Uber or Lyft car accident.

Types Of Uber And Lyft Car Accidents:

There are five main categories of personal injury claims in Uber and Lyft car accidents:

  1. You’re a passenger injured in an Uber or Lyft vehicle during transportation.
  2. You’re an Uber or Lyft driver injured while picking up, driving, or dropping off passengers.
  3. You’re a driver in another vehicle injured by a vehicle operated by an Uber or Lyft driver performing ridesharing services.
  4. You’re a passenger in another vehicle injured by a vehicle operated by an Uber or Lyft driver performing ridesharing services.
  5. You’re a pedestrian injured by a vehicle operated by an Uber or Lyft driver performing ridesharing services.

Countless lawsuits have been filed against Uber or Lyft drivers claiming unsafe driving because they were using their app while driving to prepare for the next pickup.

When Are Uber And Lyft Drivers Liable For A Car Accident?

All drivers, including Uber and Lyft drivers are liable for injuries to others caused by their negligent operation of their cars while on Los Angeles, San Diego and Southern California roads. Uber and Lyft drivers, like all drivers, must comply with the California Vehicle Code.

When Are Uber And Lyft Drivers Covered By Company Ridesharing Insurance For A Car Accident?

Under California law, Uber or Lyft company provided insurance covers their Uber or Lyft drivers involved in car accidents when an Uber or Lyft driver turns on the rideshare app. If, however; the Uber or Lyft driver was involved in a car accident when not using the app, then their own personal car insurance would provide coverage.

Again, as soon as the Uber or Lyft driver turns on the app, there is ridesharing company provided insurance coverage for a car accident.

How Much Company Ridesharing Insurance Is Provided To Uber And Lyft Drivers, Who Were Using The App In A Car Accident?

UBER:

1. $1 million coverage provided for Uber negligent drivers, who injure Uber passengers, other drivers and their passengers and pedestrians.

2. $1 million for coverage provided for uninjured/underinsured, which covers Uber drivers and Uber passengers when another driver has either no car insurance or low car insurance coverage (less than $1 million).

LYFT:

1. $1 million coverage provided for Lyft negligent drivers, who injure Lyft passengers, other drivers and their passengers and pedestrians.

2. $1 million for coverage provided for uninjured/underinsured, which covers Lyft drivers and Lyft passengers when another driver has either no car insurance or low car insurance coverage (less than $1 million).
